London ON – The London and District Distress Centre’s 7th Annual Diva Day generated $20,000 from one afternoon of pampering. The proceeds raised will help maintain the 24 hour telephone service to callers from London & Middlesex. Last year the Distress Centre received over 16,000 calls, a 10% increase in call volumes over the last year, unfortunately setting an all time call record.
“Our Diva Day’s just keep getting better and better,” says Bill Diver, Executive Director of the Distress Centre. “Within one afternoon the community comes together and generously supports our programs and services. It is overwhelming to see the interest and commitment – these divas really are fairy godmothers.”
Diva Day is an entire afternoon of pampering held at London’s Windermere Manor. Divas were able to pick from numerous wellness and personal therapy sessions, including; chocolate tastings, wine tastings, yoga, make-up tips & trends to massages provided throughout the afternoon, while relaxing in the tranquil setting of Windermere and enjoying exquisite hors d'oeuvres.
As one Diva says, “I enjoyed each and every session. I found all the practitioners/volunteers to be personable, capable and humorous. I enjoyed the interaction with the other group members and all activities.”
Diva Day is the core fundraiser for the Distress Centre which depends on the publicity, awareness and revenue this exciting event brings in. The Distress Centre volunteers provide short-term empathetic listening and confidential telephone support, 24 hours a day.
Callers from London & Middlesex who are worried, scared, sad, overwhelmed or in crisis are calling the distress lines in record numbers this year – in 2009 the Distress Centre has answered more calls than in any year during its 42 year history.
